The Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) was founded by the Secretary of Defense and mandated by the Department of Defense for all Military Services to unify their specifications into one database, this mandate took effect March 2001.  The Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) are to be used by the Military Departments (Army, Navy, Air Force, etc), the Defense Agencies  and the DoD Field Activities for planning, design, construction, sustainment, restoration and modernization of facilities, regardless of funding source.  On January 9, 2006 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also joined this initiative, making this the primary database for all government agencies.
